Mary Jo -- we were happy to run in to you and Herb what seems like a few weeks before we heard of his passing. IT was a good but brief conversation. I have great memories of Herb and Kiwanis when he was President and later wasn't he Lt. Governor of Kiwanis. He was instrumental in forming the Senecaville ares Kiwanis Club, too if I remember. We invited both of you to our 50th wedding celebration December 26, 2016 at Salt Fork Lodge 2-5 and would be pleased to see you if you can make it. Missy & Dick Baker

Over the years, Herb and I connected over our joint love of local history, the Civil War, and specifically Hendrysburg-native and West Point grad General J.C. Tidball. In fact, Tidball was the subject of our last conversation together at the Barnesville Alumni banquet a couple of years ago. Herb was a wonderful man, always a Barnesville booster, and a pleasure to claim as a friend. May God bless his family at this time and shower you with the many, many happy memories of your time together.

I met Herb when I became a member of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable. I was one of the youngest members and sometimes the only woman at the meetings. But Herb always made me feel welcome and valued my input. He was a terrific president and wore many other hats that kept the club going. He was absolutely one of the nicest fellows I ever met anywhere. My mother became a OVCWR member and she and Herb hit it off immediately. She presented an afghan to Herb that she crocheted to raffle off for the club. Herb always remembered that and when my mother passed away in 2013 at age 94, Herb had a remembrance to her published in the OVCWR newsletter--even after many years had passed since we last saw him. The world was a better place with Herb in it.

I will miss my trusted friend. When I first met Herb around 1995 we instantly found common ground learning about and honoring the men who made great sacrifices in the Civil War. Through cemeteries and libraries we plied our hobby together forming a bond of friendship, that no one can break. Those were special times that I will never forget.

I pray that the family
will find comfort knowing that Herb is in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus and that someday we will all live within his perfect world. May God comfort you now and always.
