Marilyn Mendelson Obituary

Marilyn Mendelson (Mckenzie), 87, of Wheeling, West Virginia went off on her next great adventure at her home on Sunday February 18, 2024.  She was born December,1936, in Bellaire, Ohio to the late Leo Allen and Margaret Ruth (All) Mckenzie.

Marilyn graduated from The Ohio State University and got her Masters from Muskingum University. Marilyn first taught elementary school at the White Sands Military School in Las Cruces, New Mexico from 1958-59 while her Husband was in the Army. She went on to substitute teach in San Franciso, California from 1961-1965. Then moved to Wheeling where she raised her family and was Director of Advertising at Imperial Display Company. Marilyn was a salesperson for several local radio stations until she taught Spanish at Barnesville High School from 1990 until her retirement in 2004.

Marilyn loved adventure. She skied Wengen, Switzerland by herself and went on to ski everywhere else, seriously.  She ran the Elbys marathon several times, sea-kayaked and para-glided off the cliffs of San Diego, tandem skydived in Dayton, rafted 273 miles down the majestic Colorado river, bicycled thru the tulips in Holland, river cruised in Europe and Egypt, hiked the jungles of Costa Rica, scuba dived in the Red Sea and even bought a rug in Morocco.

Marilyn was very active in her community being a member of many organizations such as Newcomers and her Book club. She was an excellent and avid tennis player. Marilyn was a life-long member of Hadassah and a past president of Temple Shalom.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Stewart Mendelson in 1984; a brother David Allen Mckenzie; and her former husband and father of her children, Jack Mendelson.

Mrs. Mendelson is survived by her sons, Andy (Jennifer) Mendelson and Matt (Sharon) Mendelson of Wheeling, West Virginia; five grandchildren, Max, Joel, Alex, Sophia and Mya, sisters, Martha Lee (Richard) Thatcher and Cynthia (David) Hilliard, a brother Mike (Susan) McKenzie; and several nieces and nephews.
