It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Donnis Arlene (Hayes) Hunkler on July 20th, 2023. Surrounded by her loved ones at home, Donnis peacefully passed from this world. She was born on March 16, 1936, in Barnesville, Ohio, to her parents Leonard and Mary WildesHayes. Donnis and her husband Ronald Hunkler began dating in 8th grade, married on August 1, 1953 and together shared an incredible 70 years of marriage.
In 1962, the family relocated from Ohio to Chandler, AZ, driving a 1954 Chevy station wagon with 5 young children and all their belongings. Donnis was an organist at St. Mary's Catholic Church for many years. She played a significant role in establishing and managing the Chandler Friends of the Library gift shop. Donnis and Ron volunteered with Hospice of the Valley and the San Tan Pride Association and dedicated 30 years supporting the San Tan Historical Society.
Donnis was cherished by friends and family, known for her generous spirit and impeccable fashion sense. She found joy in thrift shopping and hiking in the Arizona desert.
Donnis will be remembered with love by her devoted husband Ron, her daughters Deborah (Mike) Perry, Christina (Bud) Humphrey, Mary Jayne (Mike) Swallow, Deena Hunkler-Sanks, and son Kim (Felicia), as well as her brother Larry (Phoebe) Hayes. Her legacy also lives on through her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In a testament to her selflessness, Donnis donated her body to medical research. In her memory, the family encourages donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. A celebration of Donnis’ life will be held at a later date.
