Agnes Louise Timmons

On Saturday, June 16, 2018, the day after her 94th birthday, Agnes Louise Amos Timmons sprinted to her sweet victory in Christ and joined her husband Kenny in Heaven.  The sadness of her passing is offset by the certainty that her championship season was complete and that no one, but NO ONE, could have wrung more life out of her years than she.  All of us loved Aggie and, yet, it always felt like she loved us more.

A long-time Barnesville resident, teacher, coach and community servant leader, Aggie crossed the finish line in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with her two daughters by her side.  Her stop watch started in Scio, Ohio, on June 15, 1924, when she was born to the all-star team of Oliver and Clara Trushel Amos, and their three sons, Harold, Hubert, and Jack.  

After graduating from Dennison University near the end of WW II, she accepted the baton as an educator at Barnesville High School where she was a much-loved and highly respected teacher and coach until her retirement in 1991.   Mrs. T called the plays for generations of young people with her wit and wisdom, her myriad words of encouragement, and the life lessons she included in her teaching.  The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference inducted Coach Timmons into their Hall of Fame in recognition of her pioneering efforts to establish girls’ athletic teams and competitive sports in the region over fifty years ago.  Since then, she coached dozens of Barnesville Shamrock girls’ volleyball, basketball, softball and track teams to winning seasons.  In addition, she co-coached Ohio University Belmont volleyball teams while in her 80’s!   At Barnesville High School, Mrs. T also served up memorable May Day celebrations, Homecoming assemblies, Student Athletic Association activities and tournaments, and noon recreation snacks and shenanigans.    

Aggie was also a first string performer in the community where she delivered Meals on Wheels; volunteered at the local hospital; sang in the Community Choir; taught Sunday School, served as a trustee, deacon and choir member at the First Presbyterian Church; and entertained at area nursing homes and senior citizen centers in her band, Grateful We’re Not Dead.  Every Thursday night for many years, she led the residents of the Walton Home in a night of singing and devotion, spreading the very love of Jesus which permeated every aspect of her life.  In recognition of her grand slam service in the community, Barnesville chose her as its Citizen of the Year, the Pumpkin Festival Parade Marshall, and the 2011 Honorary Homecoming Queen.  In her free time on the sidelines, Aggie was a world-class bridge player, a crossword puzzle whiz, a Scrabble aficionado, a pie-baking genius, and a sensational country cook.     

Aggie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Kenneth W. Timmons; and her brothers.  She is survived by her four children, Michael D. (Gail) Timmons of Davisville, WV; Thomas P. (Tyra) Timmons of Steubenville, OH; Susan T. (Bruce) Busler of Maryville, IL; and Shelly J. (Louis) Richardson of Colorado Springs, CO.  Additionally, she leaves Big Ten grandchildren: Jay Timmons, Tricia (Bruce) Malsam, Zack (Kristiane) Timmons, Carly (Kevin) Marson, Eric (Katie) Timmons, Brian (Michelle) Timmons, Tom (Jenna) Busler, Luke (Elizabeth) Busler, Rebecca (Taylor) Westrate, and Tracy (Shawn) Toth.  Seven Great Grandchildren round out Aggie’s premier squad: Amanda Malsam, Annabel and Penny Busler, Isla and August Busler, and Camden and Mila Timmons. 

By human measures, Aggie Timmons racked up a perfect game here on Earth.  She made a difference in the lives of countless people, and invites you to do the same.  Laugh Loudly.  Love Big.  And Live Generously.  As she would shout at the school pep assemblies, “Give me one big fight,” and, boy, did she ever . . . right up until her last breath.

Visitation will be held on Friday,  June 22, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8pm and on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 10am until the time of the service at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church, 124 N. Chestnut St., Barnesville, Ohio.  Aggie will be buried with her husband in Friends Cemetery in Quaker City.  Arrangements are entrusted to Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 N. Chestnut St., Barnesville, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to the Barnesville Area Education Foundation to purchase a memorial at the high school in her name; the Barnesville Public Library; or First Presbyterian Church.
