John Lee Groves, 76, of Somerton, Ohio passed away at home on Friday, January 12, 2024. He was born at Barnesville Hospital on May 31, 1947 to the late John Delbert Groves and Geraldine Francis (Moore) Groves Brown. John was a 1965 graduate of Barnesville High School. He was a dairy farmer, basketball referee, and a long haul truck driver. He had many jobs over his lifetime. He was driving his semi on the GW Bridge in New York when the planes hit the towers. He watched the second plane hit and the aftermath that happened. They stopped all traffic on the bridge. He loved farming, football, basketball, hunting, and of course his family. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Nattie Groves and Rodger Groves; step-brother, Larry Brown; and step-sisters, Evelyn Ward and Ruth Ann Lucas. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy Ann Groves; daughter, Cherie (Jason) Covert; son, Tim Groves, his girlfriend Lawana Campbell; the love of his life in later years his grandson, Ivan Covert; sisters-in-law, Edna Groves and Lois Groves; and several nephews and a niece. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 6-8pm at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 North Chestnut Street, Barnesville, Ohio. The service will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 11:00 with Ev. Kim McFarland officating. Burial will follow at Somerton Southern Cemetery.
