Irene Marie Grey Cowgill (affectionately known as the Barnesville American Flag Lady), 84, of Barnesville, Ohio died Tuesday evening, October 11, 2011 at the Barnesville Health Care Center. She was born on January 13, 1927 in Barnesville, Ohio to the late James Virgil Grey and Elsa Mae Underwood. She graduated from Barnesville High School in 1945. She worked for Ohio Fuel Gas Co. which later became Columbia Gas. She retired after 34 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Barnesville; Chamber of Commerce of Barnesville; Order of Eastern Star #206; Kiwanis Club of Barnesville; BPOE 1699 of Barnesville; and TOPS. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband - William W. "Bill" Cowgill; step-mother - Vera E. Gibbons Grey; two sisters - Jean C. "Joey" Grey-Wilson and Sheila Hoskinson. She is survived by her "adopted-daughter" - Betty Eddy of Hendrysburg, Ohio; aunt - Mrs. Jeanne Harris of Barnesville; brother - Virgil C. "Sonny" Grey of California; special niece - Jodi A. Wilson-Maddox of Glen Dale, WV; sisters-in-law - Janet Cowgill of Barnesville and Mary Lou Skinner Cowgill of Cambridge; brothers-in-law - Richard Cowgill of Alabama and John Mason of Bethesda; several nieces and nephews and many friends. There will be a graveside service Sunday October 16, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Crestview Cemetery in Barnesville, Ohio with the Rev. John Partridge officiating.
