Richard H. "Lefty" Hall, 77, of Barnesville, Ohio passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019 at his home. He was born on March 6, 1941 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Harold O. and Lucille M. (Peters) Hall.
"Lefty" Hall graduated from Barnesville High School in 1959, where he lettered in baseball and track. A 1965 graduate of Ohio University, Lefty accepted his first teaching and coaching assignments that same year at Powhatan High School. In 1968, Lefty was hired at St. Clairsville High School where he led the baseball program for 33 years and his teams amassed a 515-320 record. Lefty also coached the Red Devils golf team for 27 years where his teams finished with a record of 601-123. With over 1,100 coaching victories and 21 OVAC championships, Lefty was inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame in 2006 and the OHSAA Hall of Fame in 1995. Lefty was the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame Man of the Year in 1999, inducted into the Barnesville Area Education Foundation Hall of Fame in 2012, and inducted into the St. Clairsville High School Hall of Fame in 2008. Above all, Lefty considered himself a teacher who coached rather than a coach who taught. His passion for World History resonated with his students who often identified him as the best teacher they ever had.
Lefty was also actively involved in many organizations in his community. They included: Secretary/Treasurer of the Seneca Sportsmen Club, Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library Board Member, Barnesville Elks Lodge #1699, Boosters Club, 200 Club, Saints Club, and Goalliners. He was also a member of the Barnesville Area Education Foundation and the Barnesville Community Foundation. He was a member of Parish Council and Lector for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church.
Lefty was a Teacher and Coach that positively impacted the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of students and athletes in Barnesville, Powhatan and St. Clairsville. During his time as a teacher, coach, and mentor he developed many relationships that lasted a lifetime, as evidence by the many phone calls, letters, and visits from former students and players. His free time was spent traveling, writing postcards, watching sports of all kinds, and supporting his grandchildren in their many activities.
Lefty is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rita (Kuhn) Hall whom he married on June 7, 1969; children, Rusty (Laura) Hall of Chicago and Rachael Weis of Powell, Ohio; grandchildren, Vanessa & Lily Weis and Carson & Keegan Hall; siblings, David "Pete" (Frances) Hall of Livonia, NY and Jane Hall of Barnesville.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019 from 1-4 and 5-8 pm at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 North Chestnut Street, Barnesville, Ohio. A vigil service will be held on Monday at 7:45pm. Visitation will be held again on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 from 9 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am with Fr. Dave Cornett officiating at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 306 West Main Street, Barnesville, Ohio. Burial will follow at Crestview Cemetery in Barnesville, Ohio.
