John Benton, 100, of Medina, Ohio passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Brookdale Medina South. John was born on February 17, 1917 in Somerton, Ohio to the late George and Etta Malone (Turner) Benton.
John served in the United States Navy during World War II fighting in the Battle of Normandy and was at the attack on Pearl Harbor. He resided in Mayfield Heights, Ohio for the majority of his life and was a foreman for the Hattendorf and Bliss Company installing gas lines throughout Cleveland and it's many suburbs for the East Ohio Gas Company. John was a 71 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 18 and was extremely proud of the work he had done over the course of his life, not retiring until the age of 81.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ruth (Brown) Benton on December 11, 2005; son, Chad Rex Benton; sisters, Olive Patterson, Betty Dunlap, Nada Derthick, and Ina Jean Nucci; and his twin sister, Juanita Yockey
John is survived by three grandchildren, Paula Reed, Cody Benton and Kyle Benton; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 11 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM with his great-nephew, Glenn Motz officiating at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 N. Chestnut St., Barnesville, Ohio. Burial will follow in Friends Cemetery in Quaker City, Ohio where military honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
