Jim was a 1968 graduate of Barnesville High School and was a retired case manager for Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services. He was a member of the Brookside Baptist Church in Reynoldsburg and attended the First Baptist Church in Groveport.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William "Scott" Murphy, Harold Jeffery Murphy, and John Robert Murphy.

Jim is survived by his wife, Karen (Lynn) Murphy; three children, Amy (Peter Chan) Glover of Charleroi, Pennsylvania, Crystal (Dennis) Smith of Columbus, and April Murphy of Groveport; eight grandchildren, Faith Murphy-Pickett, Rebecca Breedlove, Elexia Smith, Jared Smith, Savannah Smith, Xena Lucas, Maya Lucas, and Xavier Lucas; brother, John Terry (Ellen) Brown; and five sisters, Patricia Ann (James) Noe, Bridget Kay (Keith) Crum, Judith Kathleen (Bruce) Morrison, Cynthia Jane (Brian) Jefferis, and Kelly Elizabeth Mills.
